Definition of a golfing hook shot and how to fix it

What is a hook shot?

A hook shot is one in which the ball starts travelling to the right of the target but quickly bends left. A hook is an exaggerated, and less desirable, version of a draw shot.


What causes a hook shot?

Aim: the clubface on a hook shot will be closed. Check your club at the point of impact.

Grip: your hands could be reaching around the club to the right. This naturally would make the clubface close up and lead to a hook shot. This is also termed as "weakening" the grip.

Thumb and forefinger: these fingers should make a V that points inside your right shoulder, not outside.
Ball position: check the ball is not too far back in your stance

Stance: check your stance is not too wide

Alignment: check your shoulder alignment with relation to the target. You could be aiming too far to the right

Swing path: the shoulders will over-rotate if you swing on the inside of the target line. If you imagine your swing on a clock face, the club should swing into the ball at 6:30 and exit at 11:30.



Eliminating the hook


Try the following practise drill to work out that hook shot:

Practise chipping with a 7 or 8 iron. Concentrate on your wrists being square at the point of impact. If the ball hooks, it is most likely your wrists are turning over too early.
Try a longer distance shot with the same club. Try not to let your hands lead the shot, your hips and shoulders should be leading. To practise this, use an extemely slow motion so you can see how you are aligned at impact.
Keep practising with more speed until you learn the difference between the swing paths. The hook shot can be difficult to rid yourself of if you have been swinging "wrong" for a long time, but you will quickly learn the difference with exaggerated motions and gradual increases in speed.
