How to hit a flop shot

What is a flop shot?

The flop shot is a high lob, usually hit with a lofted club such as a sand or pitching wedge. The key characteristics of a flop shot are:


The ball will go a lot higher in the air than usual

The ball will have a lot more spin than usual

The flop shot is a great looking shot to a spectator - however in the hands of a beginner it can go very wrong. Phil Mickelson is one of the keenest exponents of this shot.



When should I hit a flop shot?


You would use the flop in a few situations:

There is a hazard, such as a bunker, between you and the green.
You have very little green to work with.
You feel extremely confident in your ability to use this shot and get it closer to the pin than you would using an alternative.
Try to limit this shot to occasions where there is no alternative shot available and you think you can make it.

How do I hit a flop shot?
Follow these tips to hit the perfect flop shot:

Open up your body by aiming it left of the target.
Open your clubface by aiming it right of the target - this gives it extra loft and thus backspin.

Play the ball roughly in the middle of your stance, depending on how much height you need.
Your swing should be in a pronounced vertical motion as if to "chop" down on the ball.

Swing harder than normal - a lot harder. This digs the ball out and sends it sailing into the air. This also promotes backspin.


Where did I go wrong?

The biggest pitfall in a flop shot is thinning the ball i.e. not catching it with the sole of the club and not getting enough loft. When this happens the ball will often run on through the green with a lot of travel and very little spin.


Practise is key, don't attempt this shot unless you're confident of making it or you could leave yourself with a more difficult shot afterwards.
