The Sport of Golf

Top sportsman and to a certain degree television, have a lot to answer for. They make playing sport look easy. The keen sports viewer watches in awe, certain that they too can emulate their idols.

None more so than with the game of golf, after all what could be more relaxing and simple than literally hitting a small ball around some golfing greens, then walking sedately after it and hitting it away again.

This is when the newbie golfer arrives at the golf clubhouse, convinced that he has chosen an easy sport hobby to indulge his fantasy sports hero role.

It comes as quite a shock when he suddenly discovers that he is unable to actually hit the ball and when he finally managed to achieve some contact, that darn little ball had the nerve to move backwards.

For some people this is just too much of an embarrassment and they leave the golf course, without giving any thought to the reasons for their poor performance. It is regrettable since, as with all sport, once the basics are learnt, enjoyment will follow.

The biggest obstacle to overcome is the realisation that you are not going to power that ball up into the air, whereby it flies at some outrageous speed and lands right by the flag. Golf is very much a mental game as well as a physical one.

When you start to play, hold back on your power swing. By keeping your eye on the ball, your body still, hands in line with the club head, drive the ball straight on. The club will lift your ball, not your swing. Move your feet closer together, this will help reduce the strength of your swing. The distance the ball will travel will depend on your corrected swing, not the power behind it.

It is at this stage that anyone with any serious interest in taking up the sport of golf should consider lessons. For a few lucky people, they may be able to play with friends and by watching and following their examples, manage to play a fairly decent game. The downfall to this strategy is that it is far too easy to copy other player's mistakes; if you really want to improve your game then it is time to seek professional advice.

And so armed with new knowledge and understanding of how each club or iron performs; you learn how to use your body movements to perfect your swing, your head and mind now full of all the technical jargon you have digested, it is time to put all of this into practice.

Practice, practice, practice. Your local golf course will never play the same way, every day will be different. Aside from learning the basics of the sport, you now discover you must understand the different weather elements that will affect your game. Temperature, humidity, so many ways to alter the course and speed of the ball.

However by this stage you can be well assured that you are now totally hooked on the sport of golf, spending so many hours during the day working out how you can spend more time on lowering your handicap.
