How to play a standard bunker shot in Golf

Bunker shots in and around the green can be tricky for newbie golfers; it's a shot you must hit heavy and hard without fear. To get the ball out of the sand you need to hit through the ball, possibly taking a little sand with it. The further plugged your ball is, the more sand you would take.

Playing Greenside Bunkers

Stick to your sand wedge for greenside bunkers

The ball should be more forward in your stance than normal

Open your body a little to the left of the target

Open your clubface a little to the right of the target - the two (body and clubface) should balance out. This will help get loft and spin on the ball
Dig your feet into the sand to get a good footing - this is essential.

Swing through your shoulders and keep your weight on your left hand side - this will encourage a steeper line of impact for your club.

Make sure you take a full swing and a full follow through - don't choke
Grip down the club shaft a little for shorter green side shot

Playing Fairway Bunkers

You can play a less lofted club for this, depending on the distance required. Typically, a 7 iron would be a good club to use.

This shot is less about hitting the sand than actually hitting the ball - you want to "pluck" the ball off the surface of the sand as cleanly as possible.
The ball should be nearer your left heel in the stance - this enables you to hit the ball on the upswing and take less sand.
Grip down the shaft slightly so you don't dig in too much thus taking more sand than necessary.
Your swing will be all about hands and arms - not body rotation. You must concentrate on catching the ball in the right place otherwise you won't make the full connection desired.

Playing From A Plugged Lie

A plugged lie can be extremely frustrating - but it's not as hard as you may think. Start by closing the clubface up and shifting your weight to your left side.
Concentrate on getting a steep line of attack to the ball - use plenty of wrist break for this.
Really emphasise the chopping motion - almost like you want to leave the club in the sand.

Hit the sand first and concentrate on getting a good impact. Your key here is removing the ball from the bad lie. You won't be able to get much spin this way so be careful of thinning through the green.
