A friend of mine decided to take lessons to learn how to play golf. I suggested he find a reputable PGA Golf pro to learn the game and improve his skill level. The lessons proceeded down the natural path. The Golf pro started him working on addressing the ball, the backswing, the grip, the stance, and the follow through on the down swing.
The third lesson focused on the short game. It generally means working on approach shots from 100 yards on into the green. The pro said, "to only practice the short game on grass and totally avoiding practice on rubber mats at the golf range." The theory is to play with a nine-iron or wedge for the entire nine holes. Thus players must play at par-3 or executive golf courses to accomplish what the golf pro wants done.
My friend attempted to practice solely on grass by playing par-3 golf courses. The frustration became apparent through the time spent waiting for other golfers to play their rounds and not achieving positive results on a consistent basis. Time is a crucial factor for the beginning golfer due to it being limited, because the majority of players can play or practice on weekends.
You have to understand that fifty percent of the shots a golfer makes is in and around the green. I suggested that my friend go to the public park to practice his short game or hit a small buckett of balls at the golf range. He decided to make a change and experienced success. He'd play 9 holes at the par-3 and hit a small bucket of balls with short irons. He repeated the same principle with his middle and long irons. The end result cut strokes off his game and he enjoyed playing golf much more.
The theory of only practicing on grass is fine. The problem is golf courses become overcrowded and getting ample practice time as needed. By hitting off rubber mats at the golf range you work on golf shots you want and cut down on the practice time as well. This measure doesn't apply to all golfers.
