Can your Golf Ball Improve your Game?

Being able to choose the right golf ball could be just what you need to turn an awful game to a wonderful one. However, it does not mean that you should just trot out and buy the golf ball that Tiger Woods uses to instantly turn you into a world champion. You would still need to choose the golf ball that would work for you.

The three different types of golf balls are: two-piece balls, three-piece balls and high performance balls.

If you wish to improve the distance shots you are making, you would need to use the two-piece golf ball. If you wish to improve your accuracy, then you might opt to use a three-piece golf ball or a high performance golf ball.

For beginners, two-piece golf balls would be more advisable as they are cheaper compared to the other golf balls. Also, two-piece golf balls would be great for those who are slow swingers since these balls have a larger rubber core, which would assure a faster speed.

For golfers whose accuracy is inconsistent, two-piece golf balls would also be the better choice, because three-piece golf balls just would not do if you would be making a couple of inaccurate hits in a game. Also, if you are still working on your precision, high performance balls would not be the best way to go as these balls would be more suitable for the professional golfers who have already mastered their games.

Golf balls are definitely something that you would need to give importance to as you learn more in golf and as you work on your skills to become better st your game. Being equipped with the right type of golf balls that would work to your advantage would definitely improve your score and eventually help you move on to the more competitive playing field.

Power Walking & Golf

Do you have a spring in your step while playing a round of golf or do you feel completely exhausted by the 15th hole? Sometimes you may feel out of breath just walking to your next shot.

Hours of sitting at computers, driving to work and then watching TV at home, all lead to being less physically fit, posture-related aches and pains and a general feeling of sluggishness. Then you get to the golf course and wonder why you simply just don't have the energy to complete a nice round of golf.

Golf is no different than any other sport. You need to be physcially fit to perform at your best. This is even more important if your a recreational golfer since you really don't have time to practice.

One of the most natural forms of exercise is walking. Walking is an aerobic exercise that will not only increase your cardiovascular strength, but is good for the bones and improves your posture as well. I would like to introduce you to power walking and list some of the benefits it has on your golf game.

Power Walking

This is a form of aerobic exercise consisting of rapid walking accompanied by vigorous, controlled swinging of the arms. Simply put, it is an exaggerated walking style that has more health benefits than just a casual stroll.

You want to get your power walking speed up to 4.0 to 4.5 mph for optimal calorie burning. However, if you are just starting out you may want to go at a slower pace and gradually pick up the pace over a few weeks time.

Power Walking Benefits

1. Cardiovascular fitness is improved thus giving you more endurance to complete a full round of golf, not to mention reducing the risk of coronary disease and strokes.

2. Mental well-being is improved resulting in a reduction in anxiety, stress and tension allowing you to relax and focus on the golf course.

3. Muscles are toned and strengthened allowing you to better handle the physical demands of the golf swing.

4. Helps to reduce body fat and manage your body weight therefore improving your golf physic.

5. Boosts energy so you don't tire as easily going form shot to shot.

The above are just a few of the physical and mental benefits to be gained from power walking for golf. It is a low cost form of exercise. No special clothes or equipment are necessary except a good pair of walking shoes.

Although any form of walking is beneficial, power walking is extremely helpful with golf performance, both mentally and physically. So grab your walking shoes and power walk yourself to a better golf game!

As always consult your doctor before starting your power walking program.

Golf Handicap Calculator

Mulligan+ Golf Handicap Explained
A Golf Handicap is the measurement of your golfing ability and allows you to play against others on a fair basis. It's therefore an excellent measurement of how your game is improving and in an ideal world your handicap should always be reducing or staying the same.

Handicap's represents the number of stokes you play above a 'scratch golfer', someone who plays off a ‘0’ handicap.

Your Initial Handicap Value
How to calculate your golf handicap
Buffer Zones
Adjusting your Score
Stoke Index
Golf Handicap Calculator
How does your handicap Increase
How does your handicap Stay the same
How does your handicap Reduce

Stableford Calculation - How it works!

Calculating a Golf Handicap

To calculate your initial handicap, an average of your first three rounds is used. What must be remembered is that the CONGU system does not allow a player to score more than a double bogey (+2) on each hole.

The Scorecard Manager in Mulligan+ does this automatically for you once 3 scorecards have been entered.

You can also use our quick Free Golf Handicap Calculator to create your initial value.

Under CONGU the maximum handicap golf handicap for a man is 28 and for a women 36. However, our Handicap Tracker extends Men's Handicap to 36 for handicap purposes but our Handicap Certificates are limited to 28 for men. In other countries the maximum handicap is 53.5!

The SSS - Standard Scratch Score

While the Par for the course is important, your handicap is calculated using the SSS or the Standard Scratch Score of the course. The reason is that while the Par for different courses might be the same, some courses are more difficult than others and this difference is shown within the SSS.

The SSS value can typically range between 67 and 74.

How does your Handicap Change

Buffer Zones –

Each time you add a scorecard, your handicap is recalculated. The Buffer Zones relate to your Handicap and determines how you handicap changes, either up or down. As your handicap decreases, becomes closer to 0, it becomes more difficult to lower your handicap. You will also notice that your handicap does not jump up when you have had a bad round, but increases slowly.

Category Handicap
Range Buffer
Zone Reduction (shot) Increase
(Round)
1 0.1 - 5.4 +1 -0.1 +0.1
2 5.5 - 12.4 +2 -0.2 +0.1
3 12.5 - 20.4 +3 -0.3 +0.1
4 20.5 - 28.4 +4 -0.4 +0.1
5 28.5 + +5 -0.5 +0.1

Your handicap is always to one decimal point, but for playing and calculation purposes, your handicap is rounded up or down to give a playing handicap. An actual handicap of 14.3 is a playing handicap of 14. 14.5 is a playing handicap of 15.

Adjusting your Scores

The firstly thing that takes place after adding your scorecard is that your score must be adjusted. The maximum score possible on any hole is +2 and therefore, if you play +8 on a Par 5, you adjusted score will be +7, 2 over Par.

Why adjust your golf scores? - The reason for adjusting your golf scores is to not penialise very bad holes. If you shot 10 over par on one hole but played bogey on every other hole, a handicap value of 27 would not reflect your playing ability. The next time you play you might play +18 over par and play -9 under your handicap.

Stroke Index - Shots Awarded

The stroke index gives every hole on the course a difficulty rating, 1 to 18, with 1 being the most difficult and 18 being the easiest.

Depending on your handicap, you are rewarded a number of strokes per course and these are awarded on a hole by hole basis.

If you have a 6 handicap, then you will be awarded one extra shot on the 6 most difficult holes, i.e. 1 – 6.

If you have a handicap of 12, then you will be awarded one shot on the 12 most difficult holes, stoke index 1 to 12.

If however you have a handicap of 27, you will be awarded one shot for every hole, plus one extra on the 9 most difficult holes. This means you get 2 shots on the 9 most difficult holes and 1 shot on the easiest holes,

Golf Handicap Calculator

We take your adjusted Score from the SSS of the course.
We take this value (Gross Score) and subtract your current playing handicap giving us your Net Score (Net differential)
We then apply your Net Score, to the various Buffer Zones for your handicap.
How confusing is that! – That is the reason we do it all for you.

How does my handicap increase/decrease

Some examples of a 28 Handicap player.

Your Handicap Increases

Adjusted Score - SSS = Gross Score
103 - 70 = 33

Gross Score - Handicap = Net Score
32 - 28 = 5

If Net Score > Buffer then ADD 0.1
5 is > +4

Running Handicap + 0.1
28.0 + 0.1

Your new handicap would be 28.1

Your Handicap stays the same

Adjusted Score - SSS = Gross Score

101 - 70 = 31

Gross Score - Handicap = Net Score

31 - 28 = 3

Net Score is within Buffer Zone

3 is < +4

No Change to Handicap

28.0

No Change in Handicap

Your Handicap Reduces

Adjusted Score - SSS = Gross Score

95 - 70 = 25

Gross Score - Handicap = Net Score

25 - 28 = -3

Net Score is less than handicap so 0.4 per shot

3 x 0.4 = 1.2

Running Handicap – 1.2

26.8
